PRESTON V BOWLS ENGLAND - CENTENARY MATCH - Tuesday 20th May 2008

Bowls England led by President Cliff Waterman of Suffolk, Senior Vice-President Dennis Cousins from Norfolk and Junior Vice-President Chris Smith from Nottingham, sent a strong team to play the Club. Sixteen counties were represented. A very fine game resulted in a draw, Preston scoring 115 shots to Bowls England 115 shots.  Top rink for Preston were Alf Carver, Peter Wood, Alan Limbrey and Terry Woolgar, who scored a six and three on the last two ends to ensure a tied game.  The proceedings concluded with a dinner and various presentations.

INDOORS
LADIES

Under the effective leadership of the captain, Pat Pearce, and supported by her committee, Preston Ladies had a successful season.  The Club entered four national competitions, Vivienne, Yetton, Egham and Over 60's. The Vivienne and Yetton teams lost in the third round to Egerton Park and our old adversaries, Adur. Of the two teams entered into the Over 60's the Red team lost in the first round to Wealden but the Blue team won the zone final before succumbing to Bournemouth at the next stage. In the Egham Trophy our mixed team won the zone final before losing on another journey to Bournemouth.

In the Sussex County League the Club competed well eventually finishing in third place.  As part of the Centenary celebrations, the England Women Indoor Bowling Association visited the Club in January.  It was a close match with the EWIBA just winning.  In a match against the Sussex County Women's Bowling Association we also lost, this time rather more heavily.

During the season, 22 friendly matches were won and only 7 lost.

NATIONAL COMPETITIONS

Brenda Bailey and Di Whittingham lost to Sue Mart and Pam Cutts from Nottingham BC 15 - 18 in the National Finals after outplaying England players, Carol Ashby and Pat Baines from Eastbourne IBC in the zone final.

Brenda Bailey, Terri Wall, Pat Pearce and Di Whittingham lost to Liz Tunn, Maureen Mann, Gillian Cousins and Brenda Brown from Colchester 13 - 20 in the National Finals at Lodden Vale.  All received an England trial but unfortunately, none were successful.

Lorraine Kuhler, our youngest bowler, won the zone final of the Champion of Champions. She did extremely well in the National Finals, losing only in the semi-final to the eventual winner, Carol Baker.

MEN

Yet again, the Club had a successful season. John Vickers as Captain, supported by his committee and officers, ensured that a full programme of matches were completed. The Denny Cup squad reached the quarter-finals of the tournament before losing to Kingsthorpe by 9 shots. In the Sussex County League Division Two, the Club just missed out on promotion to Division One by one shot difference to Denton Island.

Preston Bowls Week

Established in 2006 the Preston Bowls Week offers competitive bowling for both ladies and men in singles, pairs and triples events. It has become very popular with both Preston Club members and visitors alike. The singles and pairs take place in three sessions during the day from Monday to Friday with the semi finals on Saturday morning and the final on Saturday afternoon. The triples event is staged in the evening with a 6pm start time and the final on Saturday afternoon. Cash prizes of £1000 are awarded to the winners, runners-up and losing semi-finalists. There is also a trophy for the winners and a complimentary buffet on finals day for participants and spectators. Entry fees are modest at £3 per person. The club facilities are available during all six days of the competition with our excellent caterer providing, breakfasts, lunch and snack meals. A daily raffle is also held with generous prizes. The 2008 dates are Monday 28th July to Saturday 2nd August inclusive. Numbers are strictly limited as all games are played on the pristine Preston green. Entry forms are available from the club or by telephone to the organiser, Brian Griffin on 01825 763535. Don’t delay, do it today, there are only a few places left.

Preston 500 Club

Launched in September 2006 the club was set up to offer members the opportunity to enter a monthly cash draw. The entry cost is only £20 PER YEAR. Many of our members have more than one share in the club. The draw is made electronically on the last Thursday of each month at 1.30pm in the club. The only exception being in December when the draw is made on the same evening as the annual Christmas raffle. Each month there are cash prizes of £200, £100 and £50, the Christmas draw has prizes of £500, £250 and £125. After paying out all the prizes, any excess is given to the club. In the year £2006/2007 almost £4000 was used to help offset the cost of refurbishing the indoor bowling area. In the current year we will be helping to cover the cost of celebrating the club’s centenary year, 2008. Entry forms are available in the foyer of the club and there is still time to enter for the remaining draws up to August 2008.

MAY winners are: £200 - Bert Gurr, £100 - Dennis Hope, £50 - Peter Beard

The Preston Club Centenary Celebrations

Formed in 1908, the club will be celebrating its Centenary during 2008. Each club member will receive a souvenir brochure and a memento. We will also be giving all of our guests during the year a memento of their visit.   In addition each visiting captain will receive a brochure. The club will be staging several high profile matches with both the ladies and men’s sections entertaining the National and County Bowling Associations.  In addition, the men’s outdoor section will also entertain The London & Southern Counties Bowling Association and will also visit the Household Cavalry at Windsor Castle. The highlight of the year will be the Centenary Dinner which will be staged at the Courtland’s Hotel in Hove on Friday 15th August 2008.  Our Guest of Honour will be The Mayor of the City of Brighton and Hove.  We also hope to have an internationally known bowler as our guest speaker. Tickets were snapped up very quickly and the event was sold out in a few days.  Plans are in hand for a second dinner to be held on the club premises and those not successful in applying for the original dinner will be given the first opportunity.  Sun-blinds to the outside of the club house in club colours have recently been installed and we have recently received a Centenary Flag which will be flown at every outdoor match.  We hope to be staging other events during 2008 which will be advertised on the notice board and the club website.
