History of the Club

1908 The Club was founded by Sir Charles Thomas-Stanford, the Lord of the Preston Manor, and was intended mainly for workers on the Estate. W T Cripps the Estate Agent started the 3 rink Bowls and remained an active Member until his death at age 94.

1921 A full size Cumberland Turf green was laid, followed by another in 1925. The dressing-room was a Railway Carriage. In 1926 The Club won all four of the Sussex County Championships, a unique feat as far as we know.

Preston Members have achieved great success over the Years, and the Internationals, E.B.A. Champions and County Players have all played their part in building a solid tradition and a respected place in the World of Bowls.

1952 was a financial low and the Club had to borrow from the Bank and sell a small piece of land (for £2000) in order to continue. This was the result of running on a “no profit” basis and since then a healthy reserve has been a main objective.

1963 One of the Outdoor greens was sacrificed in order to build a new Indoor Facility. This was a huge gamble at the time but it heralded a new era for the Preston Club. There have been many honours at Club, County and International levels and we provide a favourite venue for Tourists and regular visiting teams.

1995 Possibly the greatest ever achievement for the Preston Club was in winning the Denny Cup, the Club Championship of England. The atmosphere was electric, with terrific support, and the Final was won against a Cyphers team with 5 or 6 Internationals. In the same Year the same piece of land (sold for £2000 in 1952) was repurchased and converted to a Car Park at a cost of £160,000.

2000 Ladies became full Members and formed the Preston Ladies Outdoor Club - a distinct step forward for the whole Club! Since then the Club has been more vibrant in the Summer with more Touring teams, mixed matches, social events and a mixed finals day .Preston Ladies have had success at all levels and the Ladies honours board shows many prestigious victories over the Years.

2006 The Indoor bowls area was completely refurbished with new ceiling, lights and heating for a cost of £100,000.
